3-Hour Fushimi Inari Shrine Hidden Hiking Tour review

Hiking tour review
My take: this 3-hour full-circuit hike (4.9/303 reviews, $69) covers the summit loop via side trails that locals use. Josh picks routes that kill the crowds. You see bamboo, proper workout, the mountain. This is the one for hikers and repeat visitors who want the whole climb without the conga line.

What the tour is like

You climb from the base through Senbon Torii, up to Yotsutsuji viewpoint, then continue via side paths through bamboo groves. Josh knows which trails stay quiet — he picks the routes without the crowds. You hit the summit (233m, nothing fancy, trees in the way), loop back down. About 4km of walking, roughly 12,000 steps of stepping. Real workout.

What works

  • Josh picks side paths with almost no crowds
  • Full circuit including summit and bamboo groves
  • Proper hiking — you actually feel it
  • Genuinely quiet routes that locals use
  • You see all the layers of the mountain

Worth knowing

  • 3 hours of constant climbing and descending
  • ~12,000 steps; your legs will tell you
  • Trainers are fine but good ankle support helps
  • Smaller group capacity than day-trip tour
  • The view at the top (summit) is mediocre — trees block it

Usually included

  • Shrine entry (free, included)
  • 3-hour guided hike with a licensed guide
  • Side-trail routes to avoid crowds

Insider tip

This is the hike for people who hike. If the morning tour fits your time and fitness, do that first. If you want the full mountain and side-path silence, book this one. Bring a litre of water.

Who it’s for

Hikers and fit first-timers. People who want to say they summited without the 2pm queue. Repeat Kyoto visitors who know the usual sights. If you only have 2 hours, the morning tour covers the essentials. If you want a mixed-sight day, the day trip adds Kinkakuji and the Bamboo Grove.

What the reviews say

Yvonne: "Josh took us on paths I didn’t know existed. No crowds, just the mountain." Kamini: "It was genuinely hard — a proper hike, not a walk. I felt it the next day and loved it." Karl Bou: "The bamboo section made it feel like a different mountain. So quiet up there."

Frequently asked questions

How hard is the hiking tour?

Moderate. ~4 km and 12,000 steps of stepping uphill and downhill. Takes 3 hours with pauses. Normal trainers are okay but ankle support helps. Josh sets a steady pace and you can ask to slow down anytime. It’s not a race.

Is the summit worth it?

The view from the summit is treed in — not great. But the quiet at the top and the side trails getting there are worth it. Yotsutsuji viewpoint (halfway up) has the actual good view of Kyoto. This hike is about the experience, not the vista.

What about the crowds?

Josh specifically picks routes that avoid the conga line. Above Yotsutsuji it’s quiet at any hour, and the side paths even more so. You won’t have photos with hordes in the background.
